The air was stale with sweat. Hailey looked at her lawyer, Abigail Nelson, expectantly, starved for some good news. The older woman sat across from her, tapping her obviously expensive wig. A pang of envy blossomed in Hailey’s stomach.

There were wigs like that in the apartment she hadn’t seen in almost a month. She adored her natural hair, but she enjoyed mixing it up sometimes. Now, all she could manage was a prison chic afro.

Finally, Abigail faced her.

“Based on what the investigators have found, the judge agreed that you couldn’t have been as involved in the crime as the prosecution first posited.”

Tears of relief slipped unchecked down Hailey’s cheeks. Thank God the judge had decided to dig deeper.

“So what does that mean? Is it over?”

“Not quite. The investigation has branched out to other suspects but they haven’t tagged the real mastermind yet.”

Just as Hailey slumped in her chair, Abigail spoke again.

“They are, however, releasing you. You’ll be on house arrest, but at least you won’t be here.”

Hailey screeched, and then slapped her hands over her mouth when a guard scowled at her through the door’s glass window. As she considered her options, her mouth turned down at the corners.

“Where would I stay?”

“What do you mean? You have your own place and if all else fails—“

“I am not staying with my parents. I’d rather rot in my matchbox apartment than move in with the people who thought I’d actually skim money from our company.”

Abigail sighed.

“I understand. Tell you what, I have a realtor friend. I’ll check if she has any rental properties that you can move into quickly.”

Hailey nodded.

“Thank you. I’d really appreciate that.”

She watched Abigail pack up the files and her heart leapt. This was the last time she’d be meeting with her lawyer in this room. For the first time since this nightmare had begun, a minuscule fire of hope smouldered in her gut.
